The Pretoria National Zoological Gardens
Ever thought of enjoying a barbecue among lion, leopard and elephants? Not a good idea this, except if you are at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria.
Established in 1899, this spot is a paradise for the animal-lover and a perfect place for a family outing. The National Zoological Gardens is home to more than 4000 species, which include:
- 97 mammals
- 106 reptiles which include the feared Black Mamba
- 161 bird species
- 279 fish species
- 7 amphibian species.
The Zoo covers a vast area, which requires the stamina of a mountain climber. But that shouldn’t be a problem at all, there are portable karts and the Zoo Choo-Choo Train to make a visit there a lot more fun.
A cable car runs across the zoo in a southerly-to-northerly direction and offers visitors a spectacular view of the gardens. From the cable car station, one can enjoy a great view of the capital city sprawled down below. The zoo also boasts a world-class aquarium facility and reptile park.
Johannesburg Zoo
The Johannesburg Zoo houses more than 3000 species of animals and is easily accesible from the main centres of the city. It’s one of the best places to unwind and get closer to animals if you don’t fancy a trip to the various game reserves dotted around the city.
The zoo recently opened a new feature in the form of the Crocodile Country. This will include a Croc Info Centre where visitors will learn about crocodiles and watch an informative but fu video on these creatures of the African waters.
The Zoo also offers 90-minute guided ferry tours on a tractor and trailer system for various groups including schools and adults looking for an alternative way to relax.
Similar tours are also offered at night and believe it or not, you can spend a night among the lions and elephants at the zoo through the sleep-over programme.
Queen’s Park and Zoo – East London
The biggest attraction at the Zoo is a rare white lion cub called Remus, the first to be born at this zoo. Both Remus's parents carry the rare white gene which put the famous Timbavati Game Reserve in Limpopo province on the map with the birth of white lion cubs in the 80s.
The zoo is home to:
- 47 mammal species
- 38 bird species
- 7 reptile species.
Visitors can see the big cats, antelope and primates, and also ride on the Smartie Train which meanders around the zoo, and children can enjoy pony rides.
Kings Park and Zoo – Bloemfontein
The zoo, situated in the heart of the City of Roses is best known for its huge collection of primates, including Charlie the Chimp who grabbed the headlines for his smoking habits earlier this year.
