Port Elizabeth, otherwise known as the “friendly city” or PE, is South Africa’s fifth largest city and quite an undiscovered gem, thanks to its undeveloped coastline. It is also known as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, which unites Port Elizabeth with the inland industrial towns of Uitenhage and Despatch. Port Elizabeth has long been known for its port and as an industrial hub. Its vast stretches of white beaches and its historical significance have resulted in the city experiencing a revival of sorts. It has become famous as the gateway to The Garden Route to the west, as well as for its malaria-free game reserves to the northeast of the city. It also forms part of the Sunshine Coast, the coastal route between St Francis Bay and East London. Football fans will be pleased to know that Port Elizabeth is a sporting hotspot and is home to some of the country’s top cricket and rugby grounds; it also houses world-class golf courses. With its temperate waters, the city is ideal for watersports, sailing and diving enthusiasts. PE is worth visiting for its surrounding attractions too – you can arrange day trips to game lodges, to the Addo Elephant National Park, to the cultural hub of Grahamstown and to Jeffrey’s Bay, famous for its impressive scenery and surfing.
