Translated as "town of rest", tranquil Rustenburg, some 115km from Johannesburg, lies in the western foothills of the beautiful Magaliesburg Mountains of the North West province. Its streets are often bright with the lilac of jacaranda trees and the multicoloured blooms of hibiscus and bougainvillea, thriving in its typical bushveld climate.
Rustenburg operates at an apparently slower pace than the buzzing metropolis of neighbouring Johannesburg. It serves a large and booming platinum mining industry and a farming community that produces grain, tobacco, fruit and vegetables.
One of the country's oldest cities, Rustenburg is steeped in history. Within easy distance of its borders, the explorer will encounter both modern-day and ancient attractions appealing to diverse interests. Of course, we doubt very much that Rustenburg will remain the "town of rest" during the madness of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.
