In a Day

  • Breakfast in Bloemfontein is more pagan feast than "break a fast". So take your time to enjoy this treat (normally included in your overnight accommodation) before heading out. The Waterfront and Loch Logan area is definitely the place if you want to shop for some crafts, and view the local music shops and outdoor retailers. You might want to stock up here for a picnic or barbecue lunch before heading out of town.

  • Travel along the R700 to the Soetdoring Nature Reserve, which is about a 40-minute drive away. Remember to drive slowly once you’re in the reserve. There are zebra, wildebeest (or brindled gnu), the huge eland, hartebeest, graceful springbuck and fish eagles, with their distinctive cry, to be seen in this wilderness area. There are other feathered show-offs a-plenty, so if you watch birds, pack the binoculars. The dam area is the spot for your picnic lunch or barbecue.

  • Walk off your lunch along the easy hiking trail, which is ideal for families or chilled urban types. Motor back to the city at your leisure.

  • Once in town, take a drive down President Brand Street so you can enjoy the heritage buildings in the late afternoon sun, when the light is ideal for photography. Drive up to Naval Hill to catch the sunset and the stars that come out shortly after. The whole city lies at your feet, and the combination of city lights and the fading dusk is magical. It makes a great spot for nostalgia pics.

  • Catch a show at the Sand du Plessis Theatre or head for a bar, shoot some pool and enjoy a light supper before hitting the dance floor.
