This is a self-drive itinerary that can be taken with a registered tour operator. This particular itinerary is jam-packed with activity, so if you want to move at a slower pace – just choose your absolute must-do’s from the suggested list below:
- The familiar South African icon, Table Mountain, is the obvious first stop on a day in Cape Town. If the weather is good*, be at the cableway station at 08.30am, in time for the first departure. A rotating gondola whips you to the summit, affording 360° views of the city. (*The cable car is closed during bad weather, so check ahead to see if it is operating.)
- The world’s most beautiful coastline now begs to be explored. Head out for the Atlantic Coast, from Bantry Bay to the fashionable beaches of Clifton.
- Next up, Camps Bay in the shadow of the Twelve Apostles Mountain, is tremendously popular. If you can find a parking spot, walk down to the water’s edge, or sip a coffee in one of the many eateries across the road.
- After the beaches of Bakoven and Llandudno, you’ll hit Hout Bay. It’s worth a stop here to watch the harbour traffic and tuck into some freshly fried fish and chips on Mariner’s Wharf. If there’s time, you can visit the World of Birds.
- Now for Chapman’s Peak, the masterpiece of construction crafted in 1922. The winding drive around sheer cliffs that appear perilous and breathtaking viewpoints over the crashing sea below is a fantastic experience that shouldn’t be missed.
- This mountain pass terminates at the village of Noordhoek. Then it’s on to Kommetjie, with its lighthouse landmark, and Scarborough. You’ll soon find yourself at the entrance to the dramatic Cape Point. Make your way up to the lighthouse, the last part of the journey by funicular. Views of rugged coast and wild sea will not disappoint.
- You have rounded the peninsula and are now on the False Bay coast. You will travel through Simon’s Town, rich in naval heritage, and Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins attract much attention.
- A chain of seaside towns follow – Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, St James and Muizenberg, before you can turn inland and make your way back into town on the M3 highway.
- After a day of scenic awe, you’ll want to keep the adrenaline flowing. Make your way to Cape Town’s top attraction, the V&A Waterfront, for dinner, entertainment and late night shopping.
If you like the sound of this, the funky Johannesburg day-tripper itinerary may also appeal to your sense of fun.
