Get an early start to your full day in Durban. Take a walk or jog along one of the beach promenades or do some stretches on the beach to get the oxygen pumping through the system. Maybe have a quick refreshing swim in the breakers.
-
Take a trip to sea with the Sharks Board in Umhlanga (just 15 minutes north of the city centre) to inspect the shark nets. Mid-year is dolphin time and you may get to catch a glimpse of some of these playful creatures. Back on shore, enjoy a breakfast of fresh fruit or a full-on fry-up at one of the pavement or beachfront cafes.
-
Time for African-style shopping at the Warwick Triangle markets in the city centre. See traditional medicines sold by an inyanga (traditional healer) and learn more about traditional Zulu culture.
-
Head to the Indian market at Victoria Street next door and buy fiery spices. Take a step just around the corner and you’re into Grey Street for dazzling fabrics and great value clothing. Durban’s Indian community is the largest outside of India, so enjoy the neighbourly vibes along this famous street.
-
See modern African city life in Broad Street on the 10-minute walk to the Oyster Bar at Wilson’s Wharf, harbour-side. Whet your appetite with some fresh oysters, of course, and a glass of South African bubbly. For main course and dessert, go restaurant hopping – you’re spoilt for choice at the Wharf.
-
After lunch walk from Wilson’s through the city to learn about Durban’s history. First stop is the Old House Museum in St Andrew’s Street. Walk along Victoria Embankment to admire the Art Deco buildings – some of the best-preserved examples in the world. The art gallery at the City Hall is a must, followed by a visit to the Natural Science Museum.

Quench your thirst with sundowners at Joe Kools or one of Durbs’ other fun beachfront bars. Where will the night take you? Dinner on the plaza at Gateway, a pub in Umhlanga Rocks, or Florida Road ‘til dawn? Hey, you’re on holiday, do them all and sleep late tomorrow!
