If you have more time to spare, add a few days of Mpumalanga magic to your Limpopo adventure:
-
If you’re after peace, quiet and wild animals, head for the Kruger National Park, via the town of Phalaborwa. Once you are within the park, spend several slow days travelling south though this marvelous landscape, and stay in tented camps, chalets, bungalows or luxury lodges. The Numbi gate further south, leads you to the town of Hazyview and the amazing scenery of the Mpumalanga Lowveld.
-
A spectacular canyon, incredible mountains, mist-shrouded waterfalls and freshwater lakes – the scenery here is truly awesome. The best way to see it all is a drive along the Panorama Route – which features the Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga's greatest wonder. The most prominent feature of the canyon is the Three Rondavels - three huge rocks spiralling out of the far wall of the canyon with tops that look like roofs of traditional African huts. The lookout point at God’s Window has views stretching almost 100km away. And don’t miss Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Known as nature's wishing well, they are a surreal complex of smooth cylindrical potholes and rock sculptures, hollowed out by whirlpools over millions of years.

You can return to Polokwane either via Graskop or Sabie. Either way you get to drive along the Abel Erasmus Pass, named after a 19th century pioneer. It descends 800 metres in its 24 km length, the highlight of which is an extraordinary feat of engineering, the Strijdom Tunnel. You emerge from darkness into bright sunlight nearly a thousand metres above the Olifants River valley. Travel the last bit via Hoedspruit or the sub-tropical town of Tzaneen.
Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe are all just a short distance away from Polokwane – be sure to take a look at our across-the-border itineraries.
