Head off to the Magaliesburg area northwest of Pretoria (about 70 kms). The Magaliesburg Meander comes with infinite choices. Drive, explore, shop and relax, or do some activity like riding or hiking.
-
Enjoy a light lunch at a place like Hartley’s (sports bar), the Ambrosia country restaurant or Kumandine (next to a spa).
-
Next you can follow a guided horse trail, go out on a quad bike at Hollybrooke Farm or swish through the tree canopies in a harness – your choice.
-
Overnight at a country-style guesthouse with a thatch roof that serves regional specialties.
-
Get ready before dawn the next day for a hot-air balloon ride over the Magaliesburg Mountains, complete with champagne breakfast post-flight. The early morning wake up call is worth the spectacular views.
-
It’s still early in the day so make your way to Sun City – about an hour away by road; it’s a mini Las Vegas next to a wilderness area. Book into one of the four hotels at Sun City (ranging from the cost effective Cabanas to the uber-expensive Palace). Have lunch at one of many restaurants.
-
Spend the afternoon at the Valley of the Waves, where you can sail down the waterslides, bodysurf the waves or cruise around on the water in an inflatable tube.
-
Salute the sunset with something chilled, then go for dinner and a theatrical extravaganza; Sun City is known for its live theatre performances à la Vegas.
-
Work the gambling tables until the early hours of the morning, before catching a well-earned nap in your luxury suite.
-
Make an early start the next day for a visit to the Pilanesberg National Park. It is home to the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. Experienced guides in open 4-wheel drives will tell you about bush medicine, the cultural habits of the local people and the wildlife.
-
After a hearty breakfast, check out and slowly make your way back to Pretoria, stopping off at Lesedi Cultural Village, situated on the R512 between Pretoria and Johannesburg.
-
At Lesedi you can visit cattle enclosures and the traditional homesteads of South Africa’s indigenous cultures, such as the Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Pedi and Tswana. Stay for dinner if you like. Enjoy a barbecue and pap – maize porridge with a spicy sauce, and learn some traditional dance moves.
-
Back to Pretoria for that long-awaited match, or its time to further explore South Africa with another fantastic week in this diverse and exciting country.
Johannesburg
is just 45 minutes away – don’t miss out on a weekend in our City of Gold.
