With a week to spare, combine as many of the varied attractions of North West Province with the wildlife theatres of Madikwe.
- With Rustenburg as your starting point, get to know a little about the town. Spend a morning in Phokeng on the outskirts, where you can undertake a surface and underground tour of one of the platinum mines. Phokeng is the seat of the Royal Bafokeng nation, so make the most of your visit and learn about their strife-torn past, their current prosperity and their rich culture.
- In the afternoon, treat yourself to a guided tour of the De Wildt Wild Cheetah Project and appreciate the strides taken to ensure the survival of this beautiful animal. Tours take place in open game viewing vehicles.
- You’ll kick yourself if you miss the natural wonders of the Magaliesburg Mountains. If the prospect of a leisurely day of scenery, craft shop browsing and rich country meals is too slow for you, up the tempo with an early morning hot air balloon ride and champagne breakfast, or a microlight flip at cock’s crow. Another alternative is to spend a couple of hours swinging above the trees on the Magaliesburg Canopy Tour.
- A rather different world awaits in the bushveld of the Groot Marico – a world of warm Afrikaner hospitality, home-cooked farm fare, natural attractions and the local tipple, mampoer, a drink made from fermented fruit and high in alcoholic content. Learn about the humorous scribe, Herman Charles Bosman, and his comical protagonist, Oom (uncle) Schalk Lourens, in a small school building with cow dung floors.
- Take a guided tour of the area’s Iron Age and South African War (Anglo Boer War) sites, see some ancient Tswana ruins, cruise on the Marico at sundown (with a glass of mampoer in hand, of course) and spend a night on a guest farm.
- Midway through your week, visit Sun City for a couple of days of hedonistic pleasure. There are all sorts of attractions to fill your days – crocodile farms, aviaries, golf, watersports, cultural villages and an artificial beach so real that it’s hard to believe you’re not at the coast. To fill your nights, there’s gaming at the slots and on the tables, Vegas-style reviews, movies and fine dining.
- Swop the lights of South Africa’s premier entertainment complex for the quiet of the bush and one of our largest game reserves, Madikwe. Spend two days mingling with some 70 mammal species and see if you can chart up sightings of all our Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. Participate in conducted day and night game drives, or embark on bush walks under the supervision of a professional game ranger.
Don’t miss out on the Mother… no trip to SA is complete without experiencing cosmopolitan Cape Town - only 2 hours by plane from Johannesburg.
