From Meetings to Mountains

Going from a meeting to a mountain is one easy step (or trip) for the business tourist in South Africa. This is a country of dramatic mountain ranges which form part of some of our sensational scenery routes and are within easy reach of Cape Town and Durban. For clearing the mind and exhilarating the spirit, the business tourist can enjoy anything from a morning walk to evening dinner on the mountain top to a weekend getaway or a longer trip for serious exploring and adventure.

Hiking in the Mountains

Cape Town
Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain is as famous a landmark as Rio’s Sugarloaf. But not only is it a dramatic backdrop to one of the world’s top destinations; it also provides numerous trails for walking and hiking. For the more adventurous there is rock climbing or paragliding. The flat top of the mountain is accessible by a rotating cable car, by a strenuous climb or by a hiking route. From the top you have a panoramic 360° view – one of the most beautiful in the world – a sunset dinner on the top of Table Mountain is hard to beat.

Along the way you can enjoy the species of plant life and the scenery which makes the Table Mountain National Park part of the Western Cape’s Floral Kingdom, one of South Africa’s seven World Heritage Sites. But Table Mountain is only the start of the Cape’s mountain trail. The Cape Peninsula consists of an entire fold of mountains which re-emerges a half-an-hour’s drive inland. The achingly beautiful mountains of the Western Cape are the backdrop to our famous wine route, to the beaches of False Bay, to the fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Even the names of the mountain peaks are inviting: Twelve Apostles, Hottentots Holland, Cedarberg …

Durban
Names of mountain peaks are also irresistible in our spectacular mountain kingdom of the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, only a couple of hours’ drive out of the city of Durban. The name means “Dragon” mountain, referring to the jagged peaks on the dragon’s back of Africa’s most spectacular escarpment. The Barrier of Spears (as the Zulus named these mountains), Giant’s Castle, Cathedral Peak, Devil’s Tooth … these dramatic ranges of basalt and sandstone are home to one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, with leopards, antelope, over 2 000 plant species, 299 bird species and a gallery of Rock Art over 3 000 years old. Also a World Heritage Site, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, is a place of awesome beauty, which offers hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, trout fishing, walks and waterfalls, swimming in crystal clear mountain streams, and so much more.

For the visitor there is again a comprehensive range of outstanding accommodation across the country to suit all requirements and to ensure a world-class experience.
