Getting High in South Africa

Imagine the feel of the wind in your face as you skim the waves while observing dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Picture yourself gliding over majestic mountains or soaring above stunning scenery; of landing in remote countryside or on deserted beaches. Of bird-like freedom. That is the extraordinary thrill of microlighting in South Africa.

So popular has this adventure become that there are microlighting activities in just about every province of South Africa. Why not try these on your next visit.

KwaZulu-Natal

The scenic KwaZulu-Natal region offers some of the best microlighting options.

This province is characterised by its diverse landscape; ranging from tropical forests and savannahs along the coastal regions, to rolling hills further inland that build up to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains in the west.

Microlighting here is an awesome experience and it is little wonder that it is one of the province’s fastest growing sports with many clubs offering instruction, scenic flights and cross country trips. Popular spots include La Mercy, Richards Bay and Ballito on the North Coast; Cato Ridge near Durban; Port Edward on the far South Coast; Howick in the Midlands; Vryheid and Ladysmith in the north; and Winterton and Bergville in the Drakensberg.

For Something Different

For something different, a Camperdown microlight operator offers 4 day tripsto the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape and 2 day excursions to the Drakensberg. And groups are catered for with round flights from Durban to Ballito, whichinclude lunch.

Microlighting along the coast provides an aerial close-up of dolphins and the occasional whale spouting in the water. And the annual June sardine run along the South Coast is a unique spectacle of massive migrating shoals being chased by sharks and other predator fish.

Other Regions

For a vivid file of memories try Aquila Microlight Photo and Film Safaris that arrange trips around Cape Town and along the West Coast. Every flight is digitally filmed and you receive a copy of your adventure. Or experience the Karoo or Garden Route from up high.

But nothing beats Lowveld game viewing from a microlight. Here you get a whole new perspective as you watch herds of antelope or spot any one of the Big 5. This is simply the best marriage between awesome adventure and an unforgettable wildlife experience.
