Golfing magic in Mookgophong

The scenic Waterberg is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and malaria-free wildlife haven. A well sign-posted, 3-hour self- drive from Johannesburg, or 1 hour charter flight away, visitors will revel in its sunny weather, 5-star safari lodges, abundance of scenic beauty and stunning new golf resorts.

Bogey in the Bushveld

Nestling in the foothills of the Waterberg mountain range, about 10km from Mookgophong (Naboomspruit), Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro was established in May 2008, and bears the signature of former world number one golfer Annika Sorenstam.

The demanding 18-hole, par 72, bushveld links championship course is designed to be played with strategy rather than power. Tricky bushveld rough adjacent to wide corridor-like fairways and 85 bunkers make this a challenging and satisfying golfing experience. Several holes cross a natural water ravine that runs through the property. The par 3 17 th hole is Euphoria’s signature hole, with a wide dam that extends out in front, and to the right of this stunning hole.

High on Golf

Euphoria is one of the first golf courses in the world to have its own cableway. After a game, take the cable car, which links the club house, to the mountain-top Sundowner Deck Restaurant - it’s a memorable way to celebrate a round of golf here.

Euphoria offers a selection of restaurants, luxurious bush villa accommodation, conferencing facilities and a number of nature activities. Practice facilities, a wedding village, health hydro and spa, equestrian village and other sports facilities are due to open in 2009.

A Legend is Born

Due to open towards the end of April 2009, the Legend Golf & Safari Resort situated within the Entabeni Safari Conservancy, will be a golf experience like no other.

Legend golf course will be the longest course in Africa. Set amid pristine bushveld, t wo loops of 9 holes each will lead players on an adventure quest to conquer its large sinuous greens and sly bunkers, wide undulating fairways and treacherous water hazards.

18 Holes, 18 Legends

Few courses, if any, will be able to boast facilities or golfing thrills equal to those on offer at Legend. In a world first, 18 of the world’s top golfers have each designed a signature hole on the African Savannah championship golf course.

A state of the art golfing academy will offer a qualified PGA golf professional onsite, virtual training facilities, a driving range, an artificial mini replica of the course for short game training.

Additionally, there are plans for a s porting complex, boutique hotel, wedding venue, restaurant , exotic game centre, Reptile Park, recreational facilities for kids, water sports activities and a wellness centre.

One of the biggest draw cards to this superlative venue will surely be its extreme 19 th hole.

Extreme 19

Accessible only by helicopter, the world’s first extreme 19 th hole is perched on the summit of Hangklip Mountain from whence golfers can chose 1 of 3 tee boxes to attempt the longest (830m) and most dramatic Par 3 in the world! T he ball drops vertically 1300 ft, followed by a 25 second free fall, and needs to carry 440 yards horizontally, towards an outsized 2,150 yard green shaped like the continent of Africa. C ameras and tracking equipment will follow and capture the tee shot and the flight of the ball.

Golfers can choose to play this extraordinary hole in addition to their round of 18 holes, or as a golfing adventure all on its own. Either way, this mountain top launch pad is destined to become one of the most iconic holes on the planet. And if the experience alone weren’t enough, rumour has it, that a hole-in-one will earn the lucky golfer $1-million!

Golf for Good

Legend resort has been developed with the full support of the Limpopo Government, and supports a number of community benefit programmes . The Legend Foundation will enable local up-and-coming sports stars to use the resorts’ Fields of Legends complex for sports such as football, rugby, cricket, netball and hockey.

Around Mookgophong

Within the Entabeni conservancy, take an early morning hot air balloon flight or helicopter flip; and nearby visit the Nylsvlei nature reserve, a wetland birding hotspot, or invigorate yourself at Bela-Bela’s mineral hot springs and water theme park, about an hour’s drive away.
