Betting on Fillies and Fashion

Billed as Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, the Vodacom Durban July takes place at Greyville Racecourse in Durban. Often likened to Britain’s Royal Ascot, there is no sport's happening on the continent quite like it.

Pedigree Punters

The premier social event of the year for horserace owners, bookies and horseracing fans, the Durban July is open to horses of all ages and is run on turf over a distance of 2200m. Currently offering a purse of R3-million, the main race attracts around 56 000 people to witness SA’s best thoroughbreds thundering down the home straight to the finish line.

Photo-finish Fashion

High fashion has been the hallmark of the Durban July since its inception in 1897, and the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award provides a platform for up-and-coming young designers to show off their talent. Every year delivers extraordinarily high standards of creativity, and fierce competition, as fashionistas and socialites vie to outdo each other with the most elegant, classic or eye-popping outfits.

Place your Bets

Whether cheering for their favorite from the grandstand at Greyville , or at home in front of the television, bettors are advised to get their stakes in early rather than wait for race day. The huge popularity of the event means that queues for the tote will be lengthy, especially at the racetrack.

Celebrate in Style

A wide variety of catering options offer race goers the option to splurge on champagne and crayfish in formal surrounds, relax with a picnic outdoors, or head for the massive tent town to soak up the post-event parade of two- and four-legged stallions and fillies, food, music and entertainment.

The Vodacom Durban July takes place on the first Saturday of July at Greyville Racecourse.
