Badminton may be one of the oldest established sports in the world but in South Africa it remains a pleasure indulged in by few. So few, in fact, that the official website of Badminton South Africa is no longer in use and the number of specialist courts in the country can be counted on one hand.
This despite the fact that the legendary Danish badminton champion, Morten Frost, who spent 12 years in the top three of the world rankings, was appointed the director of performance for South African badminton in 2001 with the express task of developing the sport, both professional and amateur, in the country.
However, even though interest in badminton is minimal, those who are passionate about the sport have made sure that it survives. We even managed to field a badminton team at the 2004 Athens Olympics while South Africa’s players all but dominate the discipline at the annual All Africa Games.
